Celebration

I was raised by my single Korean mother, and although she worked multiple jobs to make ends meet, she always made sure we had food. Every day we’d have rice warming in the cooker, kimchi stinking up the fridge or a pot of spicy soup boiling on the stove. My mom showed her love not through words of affirmation or physical touch, but through her meals. Despite not living in Korea, she could share the flavors and history of a nation that shaped who she is as a strong, brave and beautiful Asian woman. Now that I have a daughter of my own, we are continuing the tradition of expressing love through food. We don’t live in the same state anymore, so whenever mom visits me in Maryland, we make sure to hit up HMart and order enough Korean food to feed an army!
