I always get a deep sense of joy showing my friends South Indian food as most people I know default to thinking of North Indian dishes as the standard for all Indian food without further exploring what other types of cuisine there is within the various sub-cultures of India. Every single time I take a friend to a South Indian restaurant or give them some home cooked dosa, chutney, sambar they are always taken aback not only by the flavor profiles and taste but also by how healthy the food is to eat on a regular basis. It’s a message to show all of us that we never know what we will find when we dig beneath the surface understanding we possess on a culture, their traditions, and their cuisines.
