Solidarity
I show love for my Asian American heritage and identity by learning about, honoring, and participating in Asian American-backed activism, particularly when we have joined our causes with other marginalized groups. After taking an Afro-Asian relations sociology class in college, I was empowered to grasp how decades of systemic racism, colonization, and violence have shaped our communities, and how these systems leveraged zero-sum thinking into some community members buying into the model minority myth. Learning about thought partnering and action collabs between the Black Panthers, Malcom X, W.E.B. Du Bois and Asian American activists galvanized me and bring me so much joy. Their legacies are impossible not to think of when I see Black, Indigenous, and Latinx supporters at Asian-led actions and cultural events, and when I see other Asian community members at Black Lives Matter and Pro-Palestinian events.
